In a normal portrait photo the background is left out and you can do this by setting backdrops. Make sure you realize that in a standard portrait the subject will be filling the whole frame. The lenses are very important so it is very crucial to decide which lens you are using. Making a choice for the wide lens would not be a good idea as it overstates the features of the subject.

 

If you really want to give the subject a natural touch then a normal lens would work. The other important thing is the type of film which you are using. If you are making use of the real film then you might want to realize that the best photograph comes in black and white.
